Process optimization

The correct data on the energy and material flows is the starting point for consulting by FMIcon on energy and process optimization as part of an overall energy and material concept, taking into account the technical and economic boundary conditions of production.

Typical boundary conditions are often: grid-supporting electricity procurement, backup concepts, black start capability of processes or own power plants, purchasing strategies and logistics concepts and availability for energy, materials and products in a rapidly changing market environment, storage technologies, emissions issues and much more.

When developing an overall strategy, a multidimensional matrix is basically drawn up, from which an energy- and material-optimized path with the highest overall economic efficiency results through the simultaneous use of different methods of energy and material procurement, use and storage.

Thanks to decades of experience in R&D tasks in the fields of mechanical engineering, process engineering and energy technology, FMIcon is able to implement modern process engineering methods in the process as well as carry out new, customized special developments.

Of course, all economic variants of sector coupling, coupling of energy, heat and cold generation, solar technologies, wind power and hydrogen technologies (production, storage, transportation, consumption) as well as classic methods such as heat recovery play an important role in the development of the overall concept.

The overall concept forms both the basis for decision-making and the technical, investment and time schedule for increasing energy and production efficiency. As a rule, the best technical and most economically viable solution is then made up of several different, interlinked and technically and temporally coordinated individual measures.

FMIcon is currently advising the European market leader for the production of paper from waste paper and the fourth largest crude oil refinery in Germany. In both cases, the scientific and technical analysis and reliable balancing of the material and energy quantities form the basis for further considerations and optimizations.

Research

In the course of his career, the owner and managing director of FMIcon has carried out R&D projects together with numerous doctoral students for almost all well-known European measuring device manufacturers.

Innovative research: Ultrasound for the paper industry

FMIcon is currently carrying out an R&D project together with the international technology leader for non-invasive ultrasonic flow measurement technology with the aim of simultaneous, non-invasive measurement of flow and stock consistency specifically for applications in the paper & pulp industry.

New standards in indoor air disinfection achieved

In 2019, FMIcon developed a mobile room air disinfection unit together with an internationally renowned system manufacturer for ventilation and air conditioning systems that combines several key superlatives: it is the quietest, most powerful and most economical mobile room air disinfection unit on the market. The extensive consulting activities relating to room air disinfection were transferred to a separate company "Advanced Purification Concepts (APC GmbH)".

Engineering

FIMcon carries out comprehensive re-engineering measures in the de-inking process of waste paper for paper production. Important core elements are new special developments for the metrologically traceable balancing of the chemicals used.

Physicist with a doctorate, about 20 years in a leading position as director and professor at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany.
